The University of Siena is located in a city that represents the essence of Italian culture and civilization in the world. In Siena, in 1588, the first chair of Italian language for German students was established; also in Siena, from 1917 onwards, the first courses in Italian language and culture were held after the unification of Italy. The University for Foreigners of Siena has inherited this centuries-old tradition of teaching Italian, making its mission its own: to spread the Italian language and culture and, at the same time, to open up to the languages and cultures of others in a globalized world.
